Asset-Backed Securities

Gain direct access to a wide range of asset-backed securities issued by major and second-tier banks, building societies and non-bank lenders, offering you a choice of credit risk, returns, and interest paid monthly.

Why Invest in Asset-Backed Securities?

Asset-backed securities (ABS), including residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), are a powerful complement to a well-diversified fixed income portfolio. ABS generate attractive income, offer diversification away from traditional corporate and government bonds, and connect investors directly to the financing that powers consumer and business activity. Whether you’re investing directly or advising clients, ABS can help meet your income and capital preservation needs while broadening your portfolio’s underlying risk drivers.

Access a significant market

Asset-backed securities markets are vast, both globally and domestically. S&P Global Ratings has forecast global ABS issuance of approximately USD 1.2 trillion in 2026.

In Australia, a significant proportion of home loans, auto loans, trade receivables, personal loans and other receivables are funded through these markets. Issuers span household names – the four major banks, second-tier banks, building societies and non-bank lenders – all accessing investors from around the world through the ABS and RMBS markets.

For Australian regulated institutions, ABS and RMBS issuance is overseen by APRA, Australia’s banking regulator. With few exceptions, these securities also carry a rating from at least one of three global credit rating agencies.
